The world about town was that Wallace was sacked. He may still be, but last week he wasn’t and, as a result, he is owed an apology by a long-list of people.

What is sad is that we often forget the personal toll this matter has taken on him. He has lost 4kg, as his team sits at 1-8.

Innuendo and rumour have been the buzzwords during the last week, and media organisations could do worse than look them up in the dictionary.

The rule for stories is the requirement of two independent sources to verify the facts. Some say this was done, but that is unlikely. Either journalists didn’t verify their sources or there was a last-minute call that allowed Wallace to keep his job.

Whatever it was, the fact remains that Wallace – or any coach – deserves better. Wallace has been nothing if not co-operative in his dealings with the media. It is time he received the same treatment.

Yes, the media has a right to cover his departure, but it should be reported correctly. Journalists can get parts of stories wrong, but rarely is the whole story reported incorrectly, as it was last week.

Wallace appears little chance to keep his job beyond this season. But he should coach out the year. He deserves that right, given the treatment he has received from all and sundry, including the media.
